I strive to center my teaching around my student’s needs, experiences, interests, and abilities. I strive to make school fun and interesting by letting students work with hands-on projects, so quality learning can happen in their everyday lives. The learning that occurs in my classroom is ongoing in hopes to create growth in my students.
I believe as a teacher it is my job to instill the life long love of learning into each and every one of my student’s lives. To do this I have to show my students the importance of learning and how fun it can be. This will allow students to not only be successful in my classroom, but to be successful in life itself. My students are my priority and for them to be as successful as possible, I have to put as much of my own time and energy into them as I expect them to put into their school work.
To instill this love of learning I think that much of what goes on in my classroom is based on an individual basis. Students learn in so many different ways; if I don’t try and understand what those ways are and do my best to make my teaching to fit their needs, they could and easily will, fall through the cracks. Not only this, but if my students feel as if their needs aren’t important they will feel as if my teachings aren’t important. To see my students grow in the love of learning I have to take an interest in their lives; I have to learn how they learn, teach how they need to be taught, and understand where each and every one of them are coming from. They will be given multiple ways in which to learn things in my class. Integrated curriculum is one way in which I will work to serve my students needs. I do my best to intertwine all of the subjects to help my students learn to the best of their abilities. I believe is essential to make learning fun and interactive.
To understand where my students are coming from, I understand and take an interest in their personal lives. Not every student that comes into my classroom will have the same background. My classroom will be a community where my students and I can help each other through what ever challenges are needed to be faced. This community will interact with one another and develop social qualities such as cooperation and tolerance for different points of view. This builds a better learning community, in which students can help eachother be more successful in everything they do.
Though their lives may be different, the expectation will not be; I set high standards for my students. In my class all students are expected to put forth their best efforts. I have to give my students confidence in everything they do and to show them that they are capable of doing anything they set their minds on. All students are capable of succeeding in the classroom; some students may need assistants in different ways, but that doesn’t mean that they will be incapable of doing what I put in front of them. To get the most out of my students I try and raise their confidence and self motivation. Students who have learned these will find that being successful and learning will become much easier.
My classroom is a positive and structured learning environment, which I think is the perfect combination that will allow students to express how they feel, but also help them understand how my classroom will be managed. If my classroom isn’t functioning properly, then my job of teaching my students will not function properly. I have rules which each and every one of my students are expected to follow; students will be given a choice on how to act and they will know the consequences, whether they are positive or negative. Students are given a clean slate day. I believe that each day is a new day and that if you expect a child will be bad, that will only set you up to fail in helping them become successful.
Every aspect of my classroom will serve to meet my student’s needs, whether it is in the lessons that I teach, during assessments, or while they are just doing their own personal learning. By achieving these things in my classroom, students become life long learners which will in turn, allow all of my students to grow into who they want to be.
